Main benefits: Health & Safety legislation requires that employers provide mandatory eye tests for all employees operating visual display screens. Eyecare Vouchers schemes are the most simple and cost effective way to meet these regulations. Eyecare Vouchers are free of NI contributions for you and your workforce and VAT is not payable on their purchase.
E
yecare Vouchers are the best way to ensure your organisation meets the requirements laid down in the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992. The law introduced a wide range of measures to improve the conditions for all employees who work with a microfiche or visual display screen (VDU), including secretaries working on word processors, accounts or personnel staff performing data input, journalists, telesales staff, librarians, graphic designers and even financial dealers. And you, the employer, are legally obliged to pay for all eye tests and any special VDU corrective spectacles prescribed as a result of those eye tests.

How Eyecare Vouchers operate
  • Stage 1
You provide each employee that qualifies, with an Eye Examination Voucher. You could put this in each new employee's "welcome pack". The examination is carried out in accordance with the 1989 Opticians' Act as prescribed by law. Employees simply pass over the voucher to the optician before the examination.
  • Stage 2
After the Eye Examination, the Optometrist/OMP provides a signed and stamped two-part VDU certification of recommendation. The certificate provides a record that an employee has had an eye examination, whether VDU corrective spectacles are required and the date recommended for the next examination.
  • Stage 3
If the Optometrist/OMP recommends VDU corrective spectacles, the law states you are liable for the cost. Simply give the employee a Spectacle Voucher to cover the cost of the required spectacles.
