How to renew a business fuel card?

How fuel cards work is really simple. These smartcards with PIN codes allow staff of client companies to pay for their fuel expenses in all partner petrol stations. A discount on fuel prices is usually included in the fuel card package by most card providers. For example, cards issued by Fuel Card Services allow their users to save up to 10p per litre of fuel purchased.

The price of fuel cards is minimal: providers don’t charge more than £24 per card, per year.

Cards may be used just like any electronic payment smartcard, using a PIN:

  • Every card has an expiry date, embossed on the card,
  • This date may be the anniversary date of the day when the card was sent to the client business, or of the day when it was manufactured,
  • This date can be 12 months, or 48 months after the above-mentioned day,
  • After the expiry date is reached, the card is automatically renewed. Automatic renewal is usually preceded by an alert on the online account management platform, or on the mobile app provided.

These online tools allow client businesses to pilot their fleet, and the fuel consumption of this fleet with great precision. Considering the importance of the fuel expenses and vehicle maintenance expenses account in the company books, this data is worth solid gold.

Fuel card renewal can also be triggered on demand, when the card is either lost or stolen. Depending on providers, this renewal system may or may not be charged. The card must have been blocked prior to this. This operation can be piloted from the online account management platform effortlessly, and prevents fraudulent use of the fuel card.
