Is it possible to use a credit card machine on a phone line?

A credit card machine terminal will work when connected to a traditional phone line. However, transactions will then be made by dialling a premium rate service number, which can turn out to be really expensive. Besides, the time needed for the transaction on such lines can be quite long (about 30 seconds to dial in), and normal phone calls will not be possible during these operations.

For several years now, banking transaction have been using DSL lines, which are unlimited, or GPRS networks, in case of mobile checkouts. These technologies have considerably shortened waiting times, down to just a few seconds.

In order to use a payment terminal, it’s necessary to sign up for a dedicated plan with the business’s bank. Such plans will determine the maximum checkout amount, over which payment authorization is required, and the amount of commissions for each transaction.
