What are the different card reader technologies?

There are several types of card readers:

• smartcard readers,
• magnetic stripe card readers,
• contactless card readers,
• RFID tag readers...

With a contactless reader, you just have to bring the card a few inches off the reader to trigger the opening of the door. But with smart cards or magnetic stripe cards (“magstripe”), some manipulation is necessary as the card must be inserted into the reader so that it can be read. 

RFID tags contain a tag which communicates by radio waves with the reader; it is possible to change the information on the RFID chip.
