What legislation should be observed when planning CCTV surveillance of your offices?

It all depends on what business you’re doing and where you want to install your CCTV cameras! Indeed, the use of CCTV surveillance at the workplace is governed by strict legislation.

However, this legislation has been much simplified since the EU’s GDPR was translated into British law (and yes, this will still be valid after Brexit).

The main constraints are:

  • To let all visitors and staff know that CCTV surveillance is active in the area, using visible stickers or boards,
  • To make sure recordings are only used for the purpose intended (you can’t use CCTV surveillance to monitor work performance of your staff if it’s installed to curb thefts burglary)
  • To restrict access to the recordings
  • But also to allow it to anybody who might appear on the images

Details of the CCTV surveillance system must be submitted to your Information Commissioner’s Office.

Additionally, some businesses are required to pay a data protection fee.
